The Power of Live Experience as told by Andrew Zimmern

Jul 05, 2016

Last week BI WORLDWIDE treated our LiveX Awards finalists to a keynote presentation by TV personality, chef, food writer and teacher, Andrew Zimmern. Read on to learn more about his unique take on travel, food and the power of experience.

As you might imagine, the foodie and travel guru had a lot to say about the power of a live experience. His insightful presentation left us contemplating six key life lessons related to pushing boundaries, living in the moment and finding meaning in unexpected places.

  1. If you want to become the best version of yourself, explore the world and seek out new experiences. Introducing yourself to new ideas, activities, people and places can be a major source of personal enrichment. Zimmern says that traveling is only part of the process; we need to be curious about all of our experiences and export them back to our daily lives.
  2. When it comes to finding your place in the world, stretch yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Zimmern explained how early on in his career, he constantly acquired new skills - “I said ‘yes,’ learned how and made myself invaluable.” Keep breaking down walls and you’ll uncover skill sets you never knew existed.
  3. In the pursuit of success, perfectionism is dangerous. Unrealistic expectations can be paralyzing, especially when things don’t go as planned. Nothing is more valuable than learning to take things in stride and remaining present in the moment.
  4. If you want to be part of the tribe, you’ve got to contribute to the many. Zimmern’s exposure to some of the most remote cultures in the world has taught him the importance of investing in the greater good. Many of the cultures he’s encountered require everyone to have a diverse set of skills. Instead of contributing in one way with a singular skill, everyone is a doctor, warrior, builder, hunter, gardener and artisan. Limiting your skills limits your value.
  5. Food will always come first as a cultural connector but the real story is about the people. According to Zimmern, food itself is important but even more so is the story of how it came to be. To take it one step further, Zimmern says the most valuable thing is to understand how you can personally relate to that story and translate that meaning into your own life.
  6. The power of travel is transformative – it changes who you are and how you think. Zimmern says that it is impossible to travel regularly and not become more open minded. It is the antidote to being self-centered because you’re forced to think less about yourself while becoming more curious about others. Use food as a bridge to discover a region’s culture, dance, literature, art and conversations. It will stretch you in profound ways.

The secret to a happy and fulfilling life is all about living in the moment and experiencing all that the world has to offer. Your audiences are no different. Whether you need to resonate with your employees, sales force, channel partners or customers we can help you reach your audience and leave a lasting impression.
