One of them, of course, was &#8220;COVID-19,&#8221; but another related to a group of employees:\u202f&#8221;Essential&#8221;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re speaking, of course, of those front-line employees in manufacturing, distribution, healthcare and retail that provided so many necessary\u2014essential\u2014 products and services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One might argue these employees were essential before the pandemic, but we\u2019re paying more attention to this important segment of our workforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our attention, however, doesn\u2019t appear to have helped create workplaces for these employees that, in their eyes, are meaningful, motivational and engaging. According to our ongoing proprietary New Rules of Engagement\u00ae studies, essential workers are far less engaged and inspired than those who work in offices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com\/ae\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2025\/03\/new-rules-of-engagement-1024x577.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1007\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees who work in roles such as production, distribution, retail, healthcare and hospitality are less likely to agree with the following statements:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We have a\u202fgreat company culture\u202fwhere I work&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Received\u202flearning or development opportunities\u202fto further my career&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Been given the opportunity to have\u202fleaders listen to you&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Had a\u202fone-on-one meeting with your manager\u202fto discuss just you or your work&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Received an\u202fupdate from leaders&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I receive\u202fexcellent benefits&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u202ffeel safe expressing my opinion\u202fat work&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My\u202funique strengths\u202fhave been identified and are valued&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My organisation takes active steps to\u202flisten to diverse points of view&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My team\u202frespects me and my unique characteristics&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of our<strong>&nbsp;New Rules of Engagement<\/strong>&nbsp;trend&nbsp;lower if you are a deskless employee:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make it personal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make money a non-issue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be boldly transparent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foster belonging<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These themes are amplified in the comments of essential employees:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My supervisor is a person that I have trouble with. He has no trust in anybody. He makes the job difficult for everybody. He takes credit for everything.\u202f<strong>Makes it hard to want to do your best<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I continue to\u202f<strong>feel like I&#8217;m punched in the gut\u202f<\/strong>with continuous changes coming from upper management, unclear motives and agendas.&#8221; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I feel tha<strong>t\u202fmy talents and skills are not fully utilised\u202f<\/strong>in the current position I have. I have many talents and can be productive.&#8221; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The company\u202f<strong>won&#8217;t let me take training\u202f<\/strong>that will help me be better prepared for a promotion.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are essential employees, yet too frequently are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com\/ae\/our-work\/blog\/employee-engagement\/Plug-the-skills-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uninspired and demoralised in their workplaces.<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com\/ae\/our-work\/blog\/employee-engagement\/Plug-the-skills-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to recognising these important employees, the results are equally dismal. Each of the statements below for essential workers is also significantly lower than other employee groups:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I am confident that if I do good work,<strong>\u202fit will be recognised.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognition is\u202f<strong>provided fairly across my organisation.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have received\u202f<strong>meaningful recognition<\/strong>\u202fin my current job.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee comments again give you a sense of the lack of genuine appreciation in the workplace<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For the most part I feel very\u202f<strong>underappreciated and underpaid.<\/strong>&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The management team here\u202f<strong>does not recognise employees enough<\/strong>. The plant manager will not even speak to us at times; she just acts like we aren&#8217;t there.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My superior\u202f<strong>never offers praise, thanks or gratitude.&nbsp;<\/strong>The hourly people are the lowest priority in the company, where those who exempt are more than taken care of.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a highly competitive labour marketplace, engaging and inspiring deskless employees can reap significant benefits. Consider:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are we providing a total rewards package that fairly represents their value to our success?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do we have a listening strategy that gains feedback from employees and a strategy to follow up, so they know we\u2019re hearing and addressing their concerns?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are we communicating important information that helps our team members do their job and helps them know where we\u2019re going\u2014one that offers them opportunities for two-way dialogue?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are we building a culture where employees feel truly valued and where there\u2019s a genuine sense of physical and psychological safety?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>here are&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;enablement tools that can help you more effectively communicate to these important work groups.
