Now more than ever, are you ensuring your new hires feel supported from day one?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On board with onboarding<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A consistent and more robust onboarding program will\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com.au\/employee-engagement-solutions\/employee-turnover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce first-year turnover<\/a>, decrease time to be productive and increase new hire engagement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now more than ever, are you ensuring your new hires feel supported from day one?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some strategies to deliver effective onboarding for your employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>____________________<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research suggests&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>organisations<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;with a strong onboarding process retain new hires at an 82% higher rate.<\/strong>&nbsp;<br><strong>____________________<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How did you feel on the first day at your first job?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees rarely remember what they learned on their first day \u2013 but they do remember how they\u202f<strong>felt<\/strong>. New hires who receive meaningful recognition are\u202f<strong>4.6x more likely<\/strong>\u202fto feel inspired and inspired new hires are\u202f<strong>3.3x more likely<\/strong>\u202fto stay at their&nbsp;organisation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their recent Global Employee Experience Benchmarking study, the BI WORLDWIDE (BIW) Insights Lab surveyed 2,140 employees across 18 countries from&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;with at least 1,000 associates. Their findings showed how to better understand the current work experience, how to make it better for employees and how to create better outcomes for employers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparing the experiences of those planning to stay versus those who were not, they were able to identify certain onboarding experiences that increase the likelihood of staying:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Building excitement for Day one<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Introducing them to others<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Teaching about the job on Day one<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keeping Day one active<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Providing a challenge<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supporting mistakes<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Showing them their future<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connecting them to the purpose<\/strong>\u00a0<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com\/en-au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/01\/imageuo056.png\" alt=\"onboarding best practices graph\n\" class=\"wp-image-774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com\/en-au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/01\/imageuo056.png 600w, https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com\/en-au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/01\/imageuo056-300x196.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>These onboarding practices lead to drastically lower intent to leave:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>58%<\/strong>\u202fof those who experienced three or fewer of these onboarding practices plan to leave in the next year. The more experiences, the more that figure declines \u2013 down to just 4% of employees who experienced nine or ten of these best practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting employees on board with your company\u2019s culture is not only beneficial to the employee \u2013 it can save you time and money in terms of training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what contributes to a good onboarding experience? Here are three ideas to put into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Recognition inspires connection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>New hires who are reminded of how their presence impacts the mission of their company are\u202f<strong>2.1x more likely<\/strong>\u202f to want to stay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognition facilitates connection with others, support, promise of career growth and connection to purpose. Both team and individual recognition impact the likelihood to stay (2.3 and 2.1x, respectively).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When celebrating your new hires, ask what they would need to be successful instead of simply anticipating. People want to be seen, and sometimes the best way to see them is to communicate with them. You can do this by building out personas for each of the roles in your&nbsp;organisation&nbsp;and asking yourself, \u201cWhat would I need to succeed if I were in this person\u2019s position?\u201d Surveying these populations and&nbsp;empathising&nbsp;with their feelings and needs leads to more targeted recognition. The more&nbsp;personalised, the better \u2013 employees who feel like their managers understand them are\u202f<strong>5.7x more likely<\/strong>\u202fto feel inspired at work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u202f2.&nbsp;<strong>Celebrate your employees\u2019 milestones \u2013 big and small, early and often<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 53% of new hires had their 1- or 3-year\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com.au\/employee-engagement-solutions\/service-anniversary-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anniversaries celebrated<\/a>.&nbsp;Those who did are half as likely to have recently searched for new jobs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many positions, it may also be appropriate to&nbsp;recognise&nbsp;30 days, 90 days, or 6 months \u2013 reminding employees of their value and where they are on their journey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can supplement the experience with points, emails, celebrations on your\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biworldwide.com.au\/employee-engagement-solutions\/employee-recognition-platform-daymaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employee recognition program<\/a>\u202for gifts shipped to their home. In addition, to make it easier on managers, you can automate this process, so your employees automatically receive notifications when it\u2019s time to&nbsp;recognise&nbsp;their teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Early connection leads to long-term engagement.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to weave your&nbsp;organisation\u2019s&nbsp;mission, vision, and values from the start, so your team members can feel connected from day one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do this through pre-boarding or onboarding kits, having the team welcome the new employee or\u202frecognising&nbsp;the new employee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to ensure employees feel connected from day one is by having a designated onboarding buddy. These buddies can support new team members and help train and mentor them. They can also clarify tasks and roles and provide a safe place for the new hire to ask questions. By building connections early on, a new hire is more likely to feel a connection to the company as well.&nbsp;\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The following best practices can help you develop your onboarding strategy:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Define your audience and get to know them<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leverage and learn from external best practices<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Determine your process and outcomes before deciding how to implement them<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get feedback along the way<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>____________________<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Just as an employee\u2019s experience at a company is a journey, so is the process of supporting them. Make sure you are constantly auditing and reworking your process to meet the changing needs of your workforce.
